The full workflow

The full workflow

TLDR;

See the complete production budgeting workflow from template to PDF offer in one walkthrough. Everything you learned in 5 days, applied to a real production scenario. Day 5 of the Splinde onboarding guide.

The Complete Splinde Workflow

This is the final guide. Over the past four days, you learned about templates, AddOns, Variables, collaboration, scenarios, and offer documents โ€” each in isolation. Today, you see how they all come together. One production, start to finish.

The Workflow: From Empty Workspace to Finished Offer

Here is the complete process, step by step.

Step 1: Create the Budget

A new project comes in. You go to your workspace, click New Budget, and pick a template. If your team has saved a custom workspace template (see Day 1: Templates), you select that โ€” so you start from the structure your team has agreed on as the standard.

Enter the project name and client. Your budget is open, with the full section structure ready to fill in.

Time: under 1 minute.

Step 2: Fill in the Numbers

You go through the key positions: Producer, Director of Photography, Production Designer, Equipment, Location, Postproduction. For each line item, you enter the Amount, Days, and Fee. The totals calculate as you go.

If you are working internationally, you switch the currency on any line item โ€” euros, US dollars, British pounds โ€” and the conversion happens automatically using live exchange rates.

Time: depends on the complexity of the production. A commercial budget takes 15โ€“30 minutes. A feature film budget takes longer.

Step 3: Add Calculation Rules

For salary positions, you drag AddOns from the library onto the line items:

  • Overtime on the Producer

  • Markup on the Director of Photography

  • Employer Social Contributions on all crew positions

Each AddOn configures in seconds. The stacking order is handled automatically. No formulas to write, no cell references to maintain. (See Day 2: AddOns & Variables for details.)

Step 4: Set Up Variables

You define the production parameters as Variables in the sidebar:

  • Shooting Days = 4

  • Prep Days = 2

  • Wrap Days = 1

Then you link them to the relevant line items by typing @ in the Days field and selecting the variable. Every salary position that references @Shooting Days is now connected. Change the variable once, and the entire budget recalculates.

Step 5: Invite Your Team

Your line producer needs to see the budget. You go to the sidebar, click Invite, enter their email, and choose the Member role. They join within minutes and can edit alongside you in real time. No file to send, no version to merge. (See Day 3: Collaboration for details.)

Step 6: Model Alternatives with Scenarios

The client wants an alternative. You click New Scenario, name it "Budget Option B", and adjust the variables and fees. The delta shows you instantly how this option compares to the main budget โ€” section by section, euro by euro.

If you need a third path, you create another scenario. All paths live inside the same budget. (See Day 4: Scenarios & Offers for details.)

Step 7: Write the Offer and Export to PDF

You switch to the Offer Document editor within the same budget. You write your proposal text โ€” the introduction, the production approach, any notes for the client. You press / and insert a Cost Overview block. The budget numbers populate automatically.

If the client wants the alternative version, you select the scenario from the dropdown. The document updates.

You click Export. A professional PDF offer document is generated โ€” budget numbers, proposal text, all formatting in place. Ready to send.

Time from scenario to PDF: under 5 minutes.
