Every budget has one Budget Currency, the currency every total, subtotal and Section sum is expressed in. Any individual Cost Item can still be entered in a different currency, and Splinde converts it into the Budget Currency using a Conversion Currency rate. Together they let a budget hold real, mixed-currency spend while still reporting one clean number.
What it's for
A shoot might pay a location in one currency, a freelancer in another, and still needs to land on a single total the client or the funder reads. Budget Currency gives that single reporting number. Conversion Currencies are the exchange rates that get every foreign line into it.
How it works
Budget Currency is set in the budget editor sidebar, Info tab, in the Budget Currency block. A new budget starts in EUR. Splinde ships a long list of currencies to choose from, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, searchable by code or name.
Any Cost Item's Fee field carries its own currency badge, independent of the Budget Currency. Change it and that line becomes a foreign-currency line; a small grey bubble under it shows the converted value in Budget Currency terms.
Conversion Currencies live directly under Budget Currency in the same panel. A currency actually used by a Cost Item gets a row automatically, using a live rate. Click the pulsing dot to convert a live row to a manual one: it starts from the current live factor, rounded to 4 decimal places, and becomes an editable number you control. Click the hollow circle to switch it back to live, which replaces the manual value. A rate stays in place for as long as a Cost Item uses that currency.
Changing the Budget Currency re-reads the whole budget in the new currency. Typed figures are always kept as you entered them: a Cost Item with no currency of its own keeps its number, now read in the new currency; a Cost Item with its own currency keeps its number too, and only its converted contribution to totals changes. Your manual rates are kept as you set them and apply wherever one side of the conversion is the current Budget Currency.
Budget Currency is what every Section subtotal and the budget Total report in, wherever the budget is viewed. A Variable of type Currency always follows the Budget Currency rather than carrying its own.
Good to know
Switch a row to manual to hold a rate agreed with a client or funder, and back to live to follow the market.
