What is a Project?

A Project is a named grouping of Budgets inside a Workspace, with its own Owners, Members and status. It exists so a production company can keep every budget for one job together, limit who can see it, and track the job's progress separately from the numbers inside any single budget.

What it's for

A Project keeps a job's budgets in one place and restricts access to the people actually on that job. It also carries its own status, Work in Progress, Approved, Canceled or Archived, tracked independently of any budget's own status inside it.

How it works

Any workspace member, Editor or Admin, can create a Project from Projects → Add Project. The Create Project modal names the Project and lets you add Members from your workspace's team; the creator becomes the Project's Owner automatically, and a Project always keeps at least one Owner, so the last one can't be removed. Owners and Members both have to already belong to the Workspace: a Project adds people, it doesn't invite them fresh.

Once a Project exists, you file Budgets under it. Starting a Budget from scratch or from a template asks you to choose a Project before the Create Budget button turns on.

Access to a Budget filed under a Project comes from Project membership, not from a workspace role. The Project page states this plainly: "Only team members can see and work in this project." That holds for everyone, including a workspace Admin who isn't on that Project's member list. If a colleague can't find a budget, the most likely reason is that they aren't a Member of the Project it's filed under.

How it fits with the rest of Splinde

A Budget lives inside exactly one Workspace and, in the normal creation flow, one Project. Project membership sits below the Workspace and above the Budget: it's the layer that actually decides who can open a given budget, regardless of whether they're an Editor or an Admin at the workspace level.

Good to know

Deleting a Project deletes every Budget filed under it, permanently, rather than only removing them from view. The confirmation is explicit: "This permanently deletes the Project and every budget in it. Members lose access immediately." This is a real deletion, unlike deleting a single Budget, which can be reversed from Settings → Administration → Activity & undo.
