The financier reads the budget in a fixed order with fixed chapter numbers, and yours has to arrive in that shape. Open the schema from the free Template Gallery when it is a standard format, or build the chapters yourself as Sections, nest them as deep as the funder's structure goes, and drag them into the order the financier reads.
Start from the schema when it is a standard one
The gallery holds ready-made schemas such as AICP, SCoPE, FFA, BBC and Amazon MGM Studio. Pick one and click Start using this Template. Splinde opens with the chapters already in the funder's order, and you fill in your own lines. A funder or agency wants a standard format. Where do I start? lists them all.
Reproduce any other schema
Open the sidebar Sections tab and click the
+, tooltip Add Section, once for each top-level chapter. Name each one as the schema names it.Drag the chapters into the funder's order. A Section can be dragged in the sidebar list or by its header on the budget itself, and the whole chapter moves with everything inside it.
For a sub-chapter, add another Section with the
+and drag it onto the chapter it belongs under. Dropping into the middle of a Section nests it as that Section's first child. Dropping on the upper or lower edge places it before or after.Drag the cost lines in from the Insert tab once the skeleton reads correctly.
Above and below the line are two top-level Sections, each holding their own chapters.
The numbering
Every row carries a number on its left, built from its position: 1, then 1.2, then 1.2.3 as you go deeper. It updates itself whenever you move something, so once the chapters sit in the funder's order, the numbers line up with the funder's order too. If a schema pins a chapter to a number that its position does not produce, put that number in the Section name and let the automatic numbering run alongside it.
Good to know
Nesting runs as deep as the schema needs, so a three or four level structure is fine.
Inside any one chapter, the sub-chapters list first and the loose cost lines follow.
Every cost line sits inside a Section. Something that belongs to the whole job, rather than to a chapter, gets a Section of its own, even a Section holding one line.
Once the shape is right, save the budget as a Budget Template so the next application starts here rather than from nothing.
